Dangerous Liaisons: Blacks, Gays, and the Struggle for Equality, Brandt, Eric, ed.
1 Brandt, Eric, ed. Dangerous Liaisons: Blacks, Gays, and the Struggle for Equality
New York The New Press (c.1999) 1-56584-455-6 / 9781565844551 First Edition Hardcover Near Fine in Near Fine dj Illustrated by (dj design) Evan Gaffney
[nice clean copy, slight bumping to top corners; jacket shows only light surface wear]. An anthology of essays exploring the ongoing conflict between black civil rights activists and gay rights activists, this book "provides a platform for the leading minds of both communities -- including thinkers who straddle both worlds -- to debate the volatile subject of the relationship between African Americans and homosexuals," which would seem to be just as relevant today as when the book was first published.

The Evening Crowd at Kirmser's: A Gay Life in the 1940s, Brown, Ricardo J. (edited by William Reichard)
2 Brown, Ricardo J. (edited by William Reichard) The Evening Crowd at Kirmser's: A Gay Life in the 1940s
Minneapolis/London University of Minnesota Press (c.2001) 0-8166-3621-4 / 9780816636211 First Edition Hardcover Near Fine in Near Fine dj Illustrated by (dj photo) Gilberte Brassai
[nice copy, minimal shelfwear; faint surface wear to jacket]. Posthumously-published memoir by a veteran journalist, recounting his own deeply-closeted gay life in St. Paul, Minnesota, which centered around a downtown bar -- blue-collar during the day, but at night an unofficial gathering place for gay men and lesbians. Candid and occasionally raw, it's "a fascinating portrait of working-class gay male life in the postwar period" (George Chauncey). What's most astonishing, from today's perspective, is how incredibly careful and circumspect these men had to be -- in an era when a single anonymous phone tip about somebody's "deviant" sexuality could (and often did) lead to the loss of a job, social ostracization, family disgrace, even the ruination of a life. The Vinyl Closet: Gays in the Music Industry [cover title: ....Music World], Hadleigh, Boze
3 Hadleigh, Boze The Vinyl Closet: Gays in the Music Industry [cover title: ....Music World]
San Diego Los Hombres Press (c.1991) 0-9623497-9-8 / 9780962349799 First Edition Softcover Very Good
[moderate edgewear, slight curling at edges of front cover]. Trade PB Book, based on numerous personal interviews, that "outs" (more or less) a number of music industry figures -- some by name, others quasi-anonymously. Kinda smarmy, but nonetheless valuable for its frank discussion of homosexuality in the music business. Foreword by Leonard Bernstein.

Widescreen Dreams: Growing Up Gay at the Movies, Horrigan, Patrick E.
4 Horrigan, Patrick E. Widescreen Dreams: Growing Up Gay at the Movies
Madison University of Wisconsin Press (c.1999) 0-299-16160-9 / 9780299161606 First Edition Hardcover Near Fine in Very Good dj Illustrated by (dj) Michael Perelman
[nice tight clean copy, slight bumping to bottom corners; jacket shows some wear at edges and corners, a couple of short tears at top of rear panel]. (Living Out: Gay and Lesbian Autobiographies) Series (B&W photographs) This autobiography "traces [the author's] development from childhood to gay male adulthood as a series of encounters, sometimes mournful, sometimes hysterically funny, with an unexpected handful of Hollywood movies from the 1960s and 1970s. Describing his favorite movies as if they told the story of his own life, Patrick Horrigan turns popular culture upside down and inside out. [The book] is a breakthrough in the annals of life writing and cultural criticism, a soulful, many-side exploration of what it has meant to be young, gay, and live within the mind-altering movie palace of American culture since Stonewall -- and now, within the deeper shadows of the AIDS epidemic."

The Girls Next Door: Into the Heart of Lesbian America, Van Gelder, Lindsy, and Pamela Robin Brandt
6 Van Gelder, Lindsy, and Pamela Robin Brandt The Girls Next Door: Into the Heart of Lesbian America
New York Simon and Schuster (c.1996) 0684811189 / 9780684811185 First Edition Hardcover Fine in Near Fine dj Illustrated by (dj design) Evan Gaffney
[very nice copy, NO remainder mark; jacket mildly rubbed with a bit of surface-scratching]. "What Tom Wolfe did for astronauts and Roger Angell did for baseball, [the authors] do for lesbians in this landmark book. Long misperceived as a separatist coven, a default option, or a sort of ladies' auxiliary to the gay men's movement, lesbian life has achieved a new visibility in the past few years, [but] there's been surprisingly little understanding of the divesity and richnes of lesbian experience. This funny, lively, and perceptive book will change all that." (Did it? It might be worth noting, from an historical-context perspective, that Ellen DeGeneres came out the following year.)
