2 Dorfman, Ariel The Empire's Old Clothes: What the Lone Ranger, Babar, and Other Innocent Heroes Do to Our Minds
New York Pantheon Books (c.1983) 0-394-71486-5 / 9780394714868 First Edition Softcover Very Good+ Illustrated by (cover) Jeffrey J. Smith
[short diagonal crease at top right-hand corner of front cover, otherwise just light handling wear; text is clean, binding solid]. Trade PB The author "explores the hidden political and social messages behind the smiling faces" that populate comic books and other forms of popular literature, and in doing so "provides a stunning map to the secret world inside the most successful cultural symbols of our time." This is "a book that will appeal to those who want to understand the connection between politics and culture, between Ronald Reagan and Mickey Mouse, between economic theories of development and children's literature. It is for those who are fascinated by the mass media, for parents and teachers who are worried about what their children are watching and reading, for anyone who wants to understand the way ideas are produced and manipulated in the twentieth century." (You remember the twentieth century. It was fun, wasn't it?)

The Ringlings: Wizards of the Circus, Harlow, Alvin F.
3 Harlow, Alvin F. The Ringlings: Wizards of the Circus
New York Julian Messner, Inc. (c.1951) First Edition Hardcover Very Good in Very Good dj Illustrated by (dj) Cirlin
(price-clipped) [good solid copy with one weird defect: somebody appears to have attacked the front cover with a drill of some sort, resulting in a small hole in the jacket, a similar hole in the book's front cover which didn't fully penetrate the cover except at the tip, and much smaller (like pen-point-size) holes in about the first 15 pages; additionally the jacket has a small tear and associated wrinkling at top corner of rear panel, and some light soiling and edgewear]. (B&W photographs) "It all began with a barefoot boy in his middle teens trying to learn to ride bareback on a scrawny old buggy horse in a little Iowa town more than eighty years ago. ... From these beginnings to the Big Top spectacle we know today, here is the story of how it was done -- the early hardships, the disasters, the disappointments, and the slow climb to international success by merging other outfits with their own. A book full of drama and suspense and a real success story."

Dead Elvis: A Chronicle of a Cultural Obsession, Marcus, Greil
4 Marcus, Greil Dead Elvis: A Chronicle of a Cultural Obsession
New York Doubleday 1991 0-385-41718-7 / 9780385417181 First Edition Hardcover Near Fine in Very Good+ dj
(price-clipped) [good solid clean copy, very light shelfwear, slight "spread" before page 1 (where some kind of object had been stuck in the book); jacket has some minor wrinkling and one small tear at top of rear panel; note that because of the translucence of the jacket (you can just make out the front-cover photo of Elvis through the jacket), I will be unable to apply a new Brodart cover without ruining the effect]. (B&W photographs, other illustrations) "Elvis Presley remains alive -- in the cultural imagination of our place and time. His vitality has intensified in direct proportion to the obsession with his memory. [This book] chronicles this obsession; it is a biography of Elvis's life since his death. [The author] follows the trail of this new, posthumous Elvis as an imaginative force, a kind of necessity -- 'the necessity existing in every culture that leads it to produce a perfect, all-inclusive metaphor for itself.'"

San Diego IDW Publishing 2009 1600104843 / 9781600104848 First Edition Hardcover Near Fine in Fine dj
[no significant wear to either book or jacket, BUT a previous owner's careless manipulation of the bound-in ribbon bookmark has caused an unfortunate tear to page 100; this in no way affects the book's readability, but there it is]. (The Library of American Comics) Series (comic strip reproductions, B&W photographs) Rip Kirby, whose comic-strip adventures commenced in 1946, represented "a fresh approach to the crime genre, an about-face from the prevailing hard-boiled style of detective fiction. Rip Kirby was smart and sophisticated, but still a man's man. He often applied scientific methods to his crime-solving techniques, but was still involved in plenty of action -- Kirby was an All-American athlete and decorated war hero." This volume collects all the Kirby strips from March 1946 through December 1948, preceded by a couple of brief essays about Alex Raymond's life and work.

[no discernible wear to book; jacket shows just a teensy bit of surface-scratching, tiny tears at top corners, slight wrinkling at top of front panel]. (B&W photographs, figures, tables) Fascinating account of what was then a newly-introduced home entertainment format/technology, just gathering steam for a major challenge to the already-established home videocassette business (which itself was still engaged in the Beta vs. VHS war), but eventually doomed to obsolescence. The book "explains the technology of the video disc, traces its evolution since the pioneering efforts of the 1960s, describes current and potential applications, and analyzes the cost factors so crucial to the disc's future." An appendix lists "Organizations Involved with the Video Disc as of October 1980," including equipment manufacturers/distributors and programming producers/distributors.
