Word of Mouth; a monthly publication from Warner Bros. Records - Volume 1, 1983, (Johnson, Pete, ed.)
1 (Johnson, Pete, ed.) Word of Mouth; a monthly publication from Warner Bros. Records - Volume 1, 1983
Burbank CA Warner Bros. Records 1983 NO Nos. 1-11 Hardcover Near Fine
(no dust jacket) [black buckram binding with light external wear; title embossed black-on-black on front cover and spine]. (B&W halftone photographs, graphics) Complete year (Vol. 1, No. 2 was dated February-March) of this "cheap monthly publication from Warner Bros. Records directed at retail, radio, club and college communities," with a stated aim "to draw attention to current and upcoming projects associated with WB and to do so with a fair degree of accuracy." Strictly promotional stuff, presented in a self-conscious and occasionally straining-to-be-"hip" tone, but with occasional items of genuine interest, such as: an article by Rickie Lee Jones discussing her 10-inch disk "Girl at Her Volcano"; a short discussion by David Byrne of the Talking Heads album "Speaking in Tongues"; a "mystery novella" by T-Bone Burnett; an interview with John Hiatt; and best of all, in the final issue of the year (expanded to 12 pages from the usual 8), a longish (4-page) interview with David Lee Roth and a double-page Van Halen calendar for 1984 (or rather, MCMLXXXIV)!

(no dust jacket) [black buckram binding with light external wear; title embossed black-on-black on front cover and spine]. (B&W halftone photographs, graphics) Complete year (presuming there was no December issue) of this "cheap monthly publication from Warner Bros. 9 Dylan, Bob [selected and translated by Antonio Resines] George Jackson y otras canciones [George Jackson and other songs]
Madrid Alberto Corazon Editor [1972] Presumed 1st Softcover Very Good
[moderate edgewear, some creasing/rubbing to covers]. Trade PB (No. 27 in the series "Coleccion Visor de Poesia"). Contains the lyrics in both English and Spanish for 26 Dylan songs, many of overtly political content, and including (if my research is correct) a few songs that were written but never recorded (or at least not issued commercially) by Dylan ("The Death of Emmett Till"; "Long Ago, Far Away") or were only released many years later on his "Bootleg Series" albums ("Only a Hobo"; "Walls of Red Wing"). The introduction is in Spanish only, and seems to be a discussion of the political content of Dylan's songs and the general political climate in the U.S.; among the subjects referenced are the Chicago Seven, Kent State, Attica, Sacco and Vanzetti, and Angela Davis. Includes a 3-page discography.

New York Franklin Watts (c.1997) 0-531-11357-4 / 9780531113578 First Edition Hardcover Fine in Fine dj
[a brand-spanking new book: tight, clean, and unblemished]. (B&W photographs) "This book explores the inventions and influence of the great brass and reed players in the long history of jazz," and is one of "a series of books that examines the history of jazz through the stories of the masters and great innovators on each instrument." Discusses the early years, the big band/swing era, the bebop revolution of the 1940s, the improvisational style of modern jazz, and so on, through free jazz styles and jazz-rock fusion of the 1970s and beyond. Among the many great horn players discussed are Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Ornette Coleman. Includes "Suggested Listening" appendix, and a bibliography. While pitched to the young adult reader, this is nonetheless a very creditable survey of its subject. (Per the jacket, this is the "library binding," but is definitely NOT an ex-library book.)

Urbana/Chicago/London University of Illinois Press (c.1972) 0-252-00181-8 / 9780252001819 First Edition Hardcover Very Good in Very Good- dj
[boards slightly warped, foxing to page edges; jacket edgeworn, small chips at bottom of spine and bottom corner of rear panel]. (Music in American Life) Series (B&W photographs, facsimiles) An historical and critical examination of mining-related folksongs between 1925 and 1970, songs which "portray the life and values of miners, and reveal changes in folk society due to industrialization, urbanization, and mass-media technology. [The author] draws on ballad scholarship, labor history, and popular-culture study to explore coal-mining songs and also country music, Negro blues, and problems in current folklore study. He shows for the first time not only that commercial records can be used to document an oral tradition, but that they may be an integral part of that tradition." More than 100 illustrations, including "pictures of performers, song fests, recording sessions, miners' meetings, and union organizers, as well as examples of graphic forms that surround music: newspaper clippings, album covers, record labels, and advertisements."

Elton John: Five Years of Fun [*SIGNED* by Elton John], Hilburn, Robert (text)
15 Hilburn, Robert (text) Elton John: Five Years of Fun [*SIGNED* by Elton John]
Woodland Hills CA Boutwell Enterprises, Inc. (c.1975) NO Limited Edition Hardcover Very Good+
(no dust jacket, as issued) [light external soiling; internally unblemished]. (B&W and color photographs) SIGNED on the title/limitation page by Elton John and (apparently) Bernie Taupin. [I have *not* confirmed the latter signature.] "This book is a souvenir of ELTON JOHN's concert appearances at Doug Weston's Troubadour, August 25-27, 1975, commemorating the fifth anniversary of his American debut at the club." Affixed to the front endpaper with a strip of tape is the card for admission to the August 26, 1975 concert, "A Benefit Performance for The Jules Stein Eye Institute at U.C.L.A." The book is packed with great photos of young Elton, on and off stage, and the text (by Robert Hilburn, then settling in for a long tenure as the principal rock music critic for the L.A. Times) is much more than the usual tribute-book puffery. Hilburn started writing for the Times the same year that Elton debuted at the Troubadour, in fact, and later accompanied him on his famous tour of the Soviet Union in 1979. Signed by Biographee

20 Marks, Edward B., as told to Abbott J. Liebling They All Sang: From Tony Pastor to Rudy Vallée
New York The Viking Press 1935 (c.1934) NO 3rd printing Hardcover Near Fine in Good dj
[solid copy, very light shelfwear, a touch of foxing to fore-edge; jacket moderately edgeworn, marred by a rather serious triangular pull-tear in the middle of the front panel (no paper loss but considerable associated creasing/scrunching), and another much smaller triangular pull-tear where the paper has been lost (resulting in a small hole in the jacket, but fortunately in an uncritical spot); original price on jacket scratched out with new price inked over; see additional note about jacket pull-tear]. "A musical record of America through half a century, told in the lively memoirs of an old timer who knew them all -- the people who wrote our songs, the singers and performers, the places where they were heard from Bowery to Broadway, the minstrels, burlesque queens, vaudeville stars, musical showfolk, movie and radio singers -- the all the songs they sang. Illustrated with over 200 photographs, playbills, song covers, words and music of famous songs." [Additional note about large pull-tear in front jacket panel: although the paper has been moved back into place, there has been no tape-repair, which means it would be possible for a paper conservationist/restorer to do quite a decent job of fixing it up, should you care to take the trouble. Considering the rarity of the jacket, it might just be worth it.]
