Women Discover Orgasm: A Therapist's Guide to a New Treatment Approach, Barbach, Lonnie
1 Barbach, Lonnie Women Discover Orgasm: A Therapist's Guide to a New Treatment Approach
New York The Free Press (c.1980) 0-02-901800-5 / 9780029018002 First Edition Hardcover Near Fine in Near Fine dj Illustrated by (dj design) Tracy
[nice tight copy, appears unread, the faintest bit of soiling to top edge; jacket is clean and attractive, one tiny closed tear and associated creasing at bottom of front panel, minor wear at a couple of corners]. "In this book, [the author] has transformed her highly successful sex manual for women, 'For Yourself: The Fulfillment of Female Sexuality,' into a unique guide for sex therapists, presenting a new approach that has already been effective in treating orgasmic dysfunction in thousands of women. Barbach presents a group treatment method that is short-term, therefore inexpensive; that relies largely on behaviorist techniques, thereby focusing specifically on the orgasmic problem with a high rate of success; that can be used with women who do not have partners; and that is just as effective with homosexual women as with heterosexuals." (Wait a sec -- "group treatment"?)

Bound and Gagged: Pornography and the Politics of Fantasy in America, Kipnis, Laura
2 Kipnis, Laura Bound and Gagged: Pornography and the Politics of Fantasy in America
New York Grove Press (c.1996) 0-8021-1584-5 / 9780802115843 First Edition Hardcover Fine in Near Fine dj Illustrated by (dj design) John Gall
[nice tight copy, appears brand-new and unread; jacket slightly rubbed/scuffed]. The author "challenges the position that porn perpetuates misogyny and hate crimes, arguing that porn isn't just about gender and that fantasy doesn't necessarly constitute intent [and that] criminalizing fantasy -- even perverse and unacceptable fantasy -- has dire social consequences." (So did this book "completely change the terms of the pornography debate," I wonder, as promised by the jacket blurb? Read it and get back to me on that.)

Love Between the Sexes [*SIGNED* limited edition], Miller, Henry
3 Miller, Henry Love Between the Sexes [*SIGNED* limited edition]
New York Greenwich Books Ltd. 1978 Limited Edition Softcover Fine in Near Fine dj Illustrated by (cover art) Tom Bloom Signed by Author
[item itself is in terrific shape, with just one minor and almost invisible scuff line on front cover and the remnants of an erased pencil notation about the edition on ffep; the clear wrap-around shows some surface scuffing, mild rippling, and an extra vertical crease on the rear panel; my scanned image shows the item without this cover, to avoid the reflective effect]. Oblong wraps, saddle-stitched, [20] pages, unpaginated; SIGNED by the author on limitation page; "This first edition...is limited to 276 copies signed by the author, 26 of which are lettered A to Z and not for sale. This is copy no. 128. Printed for Greenwich Books Ltd. by Carol Sturm at Nadja Editions." A wide-ranging (especially considering the text is only 8 pages) rumination on the title topic, evoking and/or quoting Herman Hesse, astrology, Heloise and Abelard, Sophia Loren, Arthurian legend, and so on. "At the root of all evil, it seems to me, is the innate Puritanism of the Americans." Amen to that. [Note: I am unclear as to whether the clear wrap-around "jacket" is original to the publication, or an add-on.] Signed by Author

Art and Pornography: An Experiment in Explanation, Peckham, Morse
5 Peckham, Morse Art and Pornography: An Experiment in Explanation
New York/London Basic Books, Inc. (c.1969) NO First Edition Hardcover Fine in Near Fine dj Illustrated by (dj design) William Davis
[nice tight clean book, no discernible wear; jacket slightly rubbed, with minor wear to top edge of rear panel]. (Studies in Sex and Society) Series "Addressing himself to the pornographer's art in all the cultures in which it has appeared, [the author] explores the underlying meaning of pornography, its function in society, its various styles, and the psychology involved in the viewing and enjoyment of pornography. Dr. Peckham neither approves nor disapproves of pornography. In fact, his book can provide arguments both for those who wish to suppress pornography and for those who would liberate it. His concern is to understand it, and to search for answers to questions that have agitated the guardians of our culture for some time."

Secret Sketchbook: The Back Streets of Hamburg, Searle, Ronald
6 Searle, Ronald Secret Sketchbook: The Back Streets of Hamburg
London Weidenfeld and Nicolson 1970 (c.1969) 0-297-00108-6 / 9780297001089 1st U.K. edition Hardcover Fine in Very Good dj Illustrated by the author
[book itself is lovely, no wear whatsoever; jacket has a tiny chip and a tiny closed tear at top left corner of front panel, otherwise very nice]. (pen and ink sketches) The well-known illustrator/cartoonist's sketches of the denizens of Hamburg's Saint Pauli district (mostly strippers and hookers), made on commission for "a famous American magazine." (Searle roamed about for "Holiday" magazine in the 1960s, but this hardly seems like the sort of assignment they'd send him on.) Sleeping by day and roaming the streets at night, he made his drawings "rapidly, in the heat of the moment, as he tried to pin down the Hogarthian, joyless, sweaty atmosphere of the commercial sex industry and the tang of sour fat and dirty glasses that lingers everywhere." One critic has observed that these drawings, made in 1967, informed Searle's book "The Second Coming of Toulouse-Lautrec" (published in English the same year that this book was originally published in French, as "Filles de Hambourg"). In any case, it must've been a nice break from drawing those naughtly little English schoolgirls, though, eh?

The Durable Fig Leaf: A Historical, Cultural, Medical, Social, Literary, and Iconographic Account of Man's Relations with His Penis, Strage, Mark
8 Strage, Mark The Durable Fig Leaf: A Historical, Cultural, Medical, Social, Literary, and Iconographic Account of Man's Relations with His Penis
New York William Morrow and Company 1980 0-688-03582-5 / 9780688035822 First Edition Hardcover Near Fine in Very Good+ dj Illustrated by (dj design) Honi Werner
[nice clean tight copy with just a trace of shelfwear; jacket shows a little surface wear, minor soiling]. "Throughout history man has been preoccupied with his penis -- the emblem of and sometimes instrument for his power and dominance, the agent of his keenest physical pleasure, and the source of his most unremitting anxiety. His conflicting emotions regarding his penis have profoundly affected the way in which man has organized his civilization, ordered his institutions, interacted with both women and other men, and expressed himself in literature and art. [This book] is a provocative, entertaining, and utterly fascinating study of what may be mankind's greatest preoccupation."
