The Lunch Box and Every Kind of Sandwich, Brobeck, Florence
1 Brobeck, Florence The Lunch Box and Every Kind of Sandwich
New York Greystone Press (c.1951, 1946) New Enlarged Edition Hardcover Near Fine in Near Fine dj
[nice tight clean copy (obviously never used in a kitchen!), virtually unworn; jacket shows very light wear at extremities, long vertical crease at edge of rear flap]. (B&W photographs) "Here is the most complete and up-to-date book on lunches published. It will prove a blessing if you are looking for new ideas, menus, and recipes for packing a lunch box for the child or adult. It tells you exactly how to make hundreds of sandwiches and other simple but delicious foods for nourishing and appetizing meals -- meals you can prepare quickly, easily, and at little cost." (And black-and-white photos never looked so appetizing!) And it's "bound in washable cloth -- ideal for the kitchen," to boot. (Although this copy is in such pristine condition that it obviously never spent much time in an actual kitchen.)

Recipes for Starving Actors, Izay, Victor
3 Izay, Victor Recipes for Starving Actors
Los Alamitos CA Approved Publishers Service (c.1964) NO Presumed 1st Edition Plastic comb binding Near Fine Illustrated by (drawings & design) Arthur Gould
(softcover) [minor spots of soiling to fore-edge and rear cover, but so minimally worn that it presents as almost brand-new; absolutely of gift quality, in case you're moved to present it to a starving actor of your own acquaintance]. (line drawings) A book of recipes "related to the many moods and pecuniary posture of the dramatic artist," whatever the heck that means. There are indeed plenty of recipes, ranging from the mundane to the somewhat exotic, many with showbiz-inspired names, e.g. "Tutti-Frutti D'Hollywood & Vine (Fruit Salad with Wine)" and "Barrymore Beef and Kidney Stew." The whole thing is arranged along the lines of a playbill, with "Act I" consisting mostly of useful advice on cookery terms, how to serve wines, where to get food when you're on the road, etc., followed by "Intermission" (hors d'ouevres), and so forth; the actual recipes are interspersed throughout with bits of theatrical history and humor. The author (still with us as of this writing) has been in show business in one way or another since the 1940s, most notably as an very active character actor (mostly in TV) during the 1960s and 1970s; he also has the distinction of having appeared in all three of the "Billy Jack" movies.

Mrs. Rasmussen's Book of One-Arm Cookery with Second Helpings, Lasswell, Mary
4 Lasswell, Mary Mrs. Rasmussen's Book of One-Arm Cookery with Second Helpings
Boston Houghton Mifflin Company 1970 NO First Edition Hardcover Fine in Very Good dj
[book itself is clean and tight, with no discernible wear, no internal markings of any kind; jacket a bit faded along the spine, light soiling here and there, tiny nick at top right corner of front panel]. A new edition of the enormously popular "Suds" ladies' compendium of "mouth-watering recipes which could be whipped up with one hand, while the other slaked the cook's thirst with a cold glass of the best brew." This revision adds nearly a hundred new recipes, sent in by fans of Mrs. Feeley, Miss Tinkham and Mrs. Rasmussen, to those included in the original 1946 edition -- which, per the Foreword, had been long out of print and was at that time fetching as much as $26.50! (As you'll see from the price on this volume, history has somewhat repeated itself, although at a more modest rate of inflation.) [Note that the front jacket panel reproduces just a small section of the original 1946 jacket illustration by George Price -- probably why he's not credited on this edition.]
