Hercules [special commemorative album], (Walt Disney Productions) Golier, Patrick, ed.
1 (Walt Disney Productions) Golier, Patrick, ed. Hercules [special commemorative album]
(n.p.) (Privately Published) 1997 NO Hardcover Fine
(pictorial hard cover; no dust jacket, as issued) [bright, clean and flawless]. (B&W/color photographs, illustrations) Sumptuously-produced album, produced as an expression of appreciation to the many people who contributed to the creation of the 1997 Disney animated feature HERCULES (not one of the studio's most financially successful efforts, but no matter). A prefatory note, over the signatures (printed, NOT original) of Alice Dewey (producer) and John Musker and Ron Clements (producers and co-directors), states: "We want to thank all the people in this book for giving it their all, going that extra mile, pushing the limit, [etc., more cliches re dedication], going the distance and becoming true heroes." Most of the illustrations in this 176-page book are color photographs of those people -- hundreds of them, seemingly everyone who contributed to the making of the film in any way (including the messengers and the commissary workers). The photographs often involve whimsical or just plain goofy poses, and interspersed throughout the book are numerous examples of concept sketches, character drawings, storyboard art, etc., from the film itself. This was certainly a "limited edition" (obviously produced not for public sale but for distribution to the staff and crew of the film), and there may be no way of knowing exactly how many copies were produced -- but it couldn't have been too terribly many (for one thing, it would have cost a bloody fortune). Definitely an unusual Disneyana item.

Los Angeles Artists Rights Foundation 1995 NO First Edition Oversize Wraps Near Fine
[traces of edgewear, some small indentations on front cover]. Transcripts of sessions of this two-day symposium (April 27-28, 1995), during which various prominent film artists, movie executives, business community leaders, scholars and lawmakers participated in panels, presentations, open discussions, and demonstrations of new technology, designed to comprehensively examine the many perspectives of the complex issue of artists rights and film art protection. Participants included James Cameron (the luncheon speaker on the first day; there is a 16-page transcript of his remarks), Allen Daviau, Martha Coolidge, Nicholas Meyer and Jack Valenti. Topics discussed included "Truth and the Consequences of Alteration," "Our Digital Future" and "Responsibilities & Rights of Copyright Holders, Artists and Technology Companies." Now that Our Digital Future has arrived in force, this provides an interesting historical perspective on the then-pending revolution.

A Concise Handbook of Movie Industry Economics, Moul, Charles C., ed.
5 Moul, Charles C., ed. A Concise Handbook of Movie Industry Economics
New York Cambridge University Press 2005 0-521-84384-7 / 9780521843843 First Edition Hardcover Fine in Near Fine dj
[book is as new, with no discernible wear; jacket shows only light handling wear, hardly noticeable]. A collection of "essays on all aspects of the motion picture industry by leading authorities in political economy, economics, accounting, finance, and marketing. Topics include the estimation of theatrical and ancillary demand, profitability studies, resolution of evident paradoxes in studio executive behavior, interaction of the industry and government, impacts of the most recent changes in accounting standards, and the role and importance of participation contracts. New results include findings on the true nature of the seasonality of theatrical demand, the predictive power of surveys based upon trailers, the impact of the Academy Awards, the effectiveness of prior history measures to gauge cast members and directors, and the substitutability of movies across different genres." (In other words, everything that Harry Cohn used to have wired into his ass. I just want to say my favorite part again: "resolution of evident paradoxes in studio executive behavior." That bit's written by a Professor of Finance at Rutgers; maybe those paradoxes are more evident from a distance.)

Losing the Light: Terry Gilliam and the Munchausen Saga, Yule, Andrew
8 Yule, Andrew Losing the Light: Terry Gilliam and the Munchausen Saga
New York Applause Books 1991 1-55783-060-6 / 9781557830609 First Edition Hardcover Near Fine in Near Fine dj
[nice clean copy, bottom corners lightly bumped; jacket shows faint handling wear, one teensy-weensy closed tear at top of rear panel]. (B&W photographs) The jacket blurb calls Gilliam's film THE ADVENTURES OF BARON MUNCHAUSEN "the greatest financial disaster in movie history"; literally true or not, this is still a classic tale of modern Hollywood, with "deceit and scandal ... vendettas, political feuds and jealousy." And all this over a movie that cost *only* "an astronomical $46 million" (I think that was the catering budget on TITANIC...).
