What did that author look like...?

The purpose of this page is to present rare or unusual or interesting photographs of authors that interest me -- not necessarily well-known authors, unless the photos themselves are of exceptional interest. (I'd never put up a picture of Ernest Hemingway, for instance -- everybody knows what he looked like -- but if I ran across a picture of Hemingway with, say, a duck sitting on his head....well, that I might consider.) On the other hand, I might post any picture of somebody obscure, but who interests me, like Octavus Roy Cohen or Catharine Brody. This presumes I can even find pictures of Octavus Roy Cohen or Catharine Brody.

My apologies for the low-techiness of this page -- I just wanted to "get it going," and will re-design it as soon as I can. I will also make a big effort to add one new photo each month (it's not like I'm in any danger of running out). That's why I've decided to start dating them -- so if you're seeing this page, and the date of the Mystery Author photo is not the current month, please feel free to send me an indignant e-mail reminding me to get off my lazy butt and get a new photo posted, already!

And, if you can correctly guess the identity of the current month's Mystery Author, you can claim a 20% discount on anything in my inventory. (E-mail me before placing your order.)

At left is the photo that actually gave me the idea for this page in the first place. I love this shot, which appears as the frontispiece of the British edition (and maybe the American edition, too) of The Autobiography of Upton Sinclair.

"Upton Sinclair with seventy-nine of the books he has written."
