"A Story of a Women's Prison," which according to an author's note on the rear jacket panel began life as a film project to follow the success of THE BIG HOUSE (which she wrote for MGM in 1930), but "the shocking conditions in most of these powder kegs made me decide to incorporate my impressions in a novel rather than a screen story, where truth and cold, hard facts are often deleted by the movie censors."
