(endpaper maps) Fictionalized treatment of the 1878 trek of a remnant of the Cheyenne Indian tribe from Indian Territory (later Oklahoma) back to their home in the Black Hills of Wyoming. The same events were later fictionalized by Mari Sandoz in her 1953 book "Cheyenne Autumn," which in turn served as the basis for John Ford's 1964 film of the same name. (Arch-conservative Ford, of course, wouldn't have had anything to do with avowed communist Fast.)
