Author Manhood, H[arold] A[lfred] Title Fierce and Gentle: Stories Binding Hardcover Book Condition Good+ Edition First Edition Publisher London Jonathan Cape 1935 ISBN Number NOISBN Seller ID 11886 (no dust jacket) [solid but somewhat soiled copy, slight darkening to spine cloth (creeping onto covers near bottom of spine, almost like a dampstain), some foxing to fore-edge and first few pages, spotting on various pages throughout, soiling to top edge]. 25 short stories, plus the author's "Notes" (4 pages) containing jotted-down ideas for stories. The work of Manhood (1904-1991), wrote critic Mark Valentine, "was in the same mould as those [stories] of T.F. Powys and A.E. Coppard, with a strong rural setting and leavening of folk wisdom, and a sense of allegory or fable to them which hovers on the brink of the fantastic without embracing it fully. ... Some of his tales can be brutally macabre."
