[good sound copy, light bumping to a couple of corners, no other significant wear; jacket lightly edgeworn with a few tiny nicks, very slight paper loss at a few corners]. The exploits of a World War I pilot -- "the Romeo of the flying service" and "the gayest Don Juan of the air" -- who "swaggers through war and peace with wings on his chest and a cocktail in his hand." The South Carolina-born author (1896-1959) -- and please don't be surprised by this -- was himself a flying ace during the war, a recipient of both the British Flying Cross and the American Distinguished Service Cross. This was one of a number of books he wrote that drew on his wartime experiences, and he later made a great success for himself in the textiles business.
