[light wear to extremities, slight bumping to top of spine; jacket mildly edgeworn and lightly soiled, spine a bit faded, short split at bottom rear foldover]. "The story of three women contending for a handsome aristocrat." Originally published in Germany in 1903, as "Beate und Mareile," those being the names of two of the women who have their hearts broken (or, perhaps, cursed) by Count Gunther von Tarniff. The author in his heyday was at the forefront of German literary Impressionism; a number of his books were translated into English in the late 1920s, about a decade after his death.
