The Minox "subminiature" camera had been manufactured in Germany for a few years starting in 1936, but didn't really get going as a consumer product until production resumed in 1948 following the interruption of World War II. It was considered a luxury item, and was also the first choice of spies, being "hardly larger than a pocketknife."
