[extremely light wear to extremities, bookplate on front pastedown; jacket shows some wear and wrinkling along the top edge, slight paper loss at top of spine]. (pen and ink drawings) This book, "which has endeared Professor Leacock to the Canadian public, was first published in 1912 and has gone through many subsequent editions." It presents "nostalgic, lightly humorous sketches" set in an archetypal small Canadian town (called "Mariposa" in the book, but recognizable as Orillia, Ontario). This copy bears an interesting inscription, datelined "Brewery Bay, Orillia, Ont." and covering the entirety of the ffep: "To -- / America's 'Prince of Fun' / from the home of / Canada's Greatest Literary Humourist / 'Prof. Stephen Leacock' / -- Presented to -- / Bob Hope / In appreciation of your visit / to the / Town of Orillia / Wilbur M. Cramp / Mayor / Sept. 4th, 1957." (Hope's visit to Orillia, to help celebrate the expansion of the local radio station, is well documented; it's even possible to find a photo online of him with Mayor Cramp.) [The bookplate, by the way, is that of "The Jim Hopes," but there appears to have been no "Jim" in the immediate Hope family, so perhaps that's just a coincidence.]
