(price-clipped) [very light shelfwear to bottom edge, otherwise a nice clean book; jacket lightly soiled, minor wrinkling along top edge]. (B&W photos, maps, facsimiles) "Of the original electric railway lines which became a part of the great Pacific Electric Railway system, one of the most interesting -- and undoubtedly the most important -- was the Los Angeles Pacific Railway," which served the L.A. from its establishment in 1895 (when it was initially known as the Pasadena & Los Angeles Electric Railway) until 1911, when it and seven other independent rail lines were consolidated (in what was known as the "Great Merger") into the new Pacific Electric Railway Company, the famous "Red Cars" system which by the 1920s would become the largest electric railway system in the world. The L.A. Pacific Railway, in its heyday, "brought population and prosperity to its area," contributing particularly to the growth of Hollywood, Culver City and, especially, Santa Monica: "The LAP's Trolleys to the Surf brought multitudes to enjoy the blue Pacific -- and thousands stayed behind the make their homes near the ocean."
