(no dust jacket) [mild bumped at edges/corners]. (maps) INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the ffep. Autobiography of a missionary who spent many years in China (ca. 1917-1945). "During our years in China we wrote regularly to family members at home. Unknown to us,Mother Leger kept our letters to her and when she pased on, her family gave them to us. In recent years I began rereading some of them and was surprised at how much had faded from my memory and I realized how little the children would probably remember of their childhood experiences. So the idea of using the letters as a basis for reconstruction of actual childhood life in China was born. [The book] was written exclusively with the children in mind and was in no way intended as a picture of missionary activities. The whole purpose was to give them some idea of their heritage and their early days in the Orient. That it was continued during the war years, after they were all home, was due to the fact that life under war conditions was so totally unlike anything any of us had known before that I felt I should give them a glimpse of conditions quite unknown to them."
