[nice tight copy, very faint soiling to page edges, no significant wear; jacket shows mild soiling]. Novel (the author's first and only) about a young, attractive, single secretary, and her obsession with her boss, a New York book publisher; the jacket blurb describes it as "a warm and telling picture of a modern-day Kitty Foyle, a novel that makes clear how complicated it is to juggle the personal and professional roles of the office 'second wife.'" The author herself had come out of the New York publishing world, was co-founder of the liberal Book Find Club, and had a long career as a journalist with the old Los Angeles Daily News. The novel was written, interestingly enough, at Virginia Woolf's desk -- she and her husband leased Woolf's former home during a stay in England.
