[good solid copy, covers a bit edgeworn, tiny red dot on bottom edge close to spine]. (Cinema One) Series Trade PB (B&W photographs) A detailed critical study of Welles's film career through the early 1970s, by a critic who has long been one of the most perceptive and eloquent chroniclers of the filmmaker's work. (McBride's more recent book, "What Ever Happened to Orson Welles," is also highly recommended.) Aside from being a great critical work, the book is an engagingly personal chronicle of his association with Welles (in Chapter 2, "Meeting Orson Welles," he tells about how he got involved in the making of Welles's never-to-be-finished film THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WIND). What's astonishing (and not a little depressing) is to remember that when this book appeared, Welles was still a relatively young man -- he had just turned 55 in the Summer of 1970, when McBride first met him -- and bursting with creativity, yet in the remaining 15 years of his life he managed to complete only one more film of real substance, F FOR FAKE, released in 1974.
