[solid copy, light shelfwear and mild soiling to bottom edge, slight age-toning to all page edges; jacket edgeworn and lightly rubbed, shallow chipping at top of spine, a little soiling to rear panel]. Historical novel centered around "one of the great love affairs" of ancient Rome, the liaison between Clodia, "the beautiful patrician of Rome whose affairs and intrigues shocked even that licentious capital," and Catullus, "whose passion led to suffering, and whose suffering was fused into poetry which is read to this very day." (Cicero and Julius Caesar figure into the action, as well.) The author, "one of the leading classicists of our time," was head of the Department of Classics at the University of Alberta, and had written a number of other historical novels prior to this one.
