[book itself is lovely, no wear whatsoever; jacket has a tiny chip and a tiny closed tear at top left corner of front panel, otherwise very nice]. (pen and ink sketches) The well-known illustrator/cartoonist's sketches of the denizens of Hamburg's Saint Pauli district (mostly strippers and hookers), made on commission for "a famous American magazine." (Searle roamed about for "Holiday" magazine in the 1960s, but this hardly seems like the sort of assignment they'd send him on.) Sleeping by day and roaming the streets at night, he made his drawings "rapidly, in the heat of the moment, as he tried to pin down the Hogarthian, joyless, sweaty atmosphere of the commercial sex industry and the tang of sour fat and dirty glasses that lingers everywhere." One critic has observed that these drawings, made in 1967, informed Searle's book "The Second Coming of Toulouse-Lautrec" (published in English the same year that this book was originally published in French, as "Filles de Hambourg"). In any case, it must've been a nice break from drawing those naughtly little English schoolgirls, though, eh?
