(no dust jacket) [cloth shows a bit of wear at all edges, spine a little turned, slight bumping to all corners, teensy bit of fraying to bottom corners, one-time owner's signature on front pastedown, jacket blurb glued there as well, vintage bookseller's label (Hudson's Book Shop, Detroit) on rear pastedown; binding/hinges intact, internally clean]. Science-fiction-cum-horror novel, the author's first, originally published in France as "Le Docteur Lerne - Sous-Dieu" in 1908. An archetypal mad-scientist yarn, the book concerns a doctor who performs inter-species organ transplants, even on occasion dragging machinery and plants into the mix. The dedication is to H.G. Wells -- "I beg you, Sir, to accept this book." -- from whose work (perhaps specifically in this instance "The Island of Doctor Moreau") the author quite obviously took inspiration.
