[moderate wear at spine ends, top page edges somewhat dust-darkened, bookplate on front pastedown and one-time owner's name on half-title page (see notes); jacket darkened at spine, minor paper loss at spine ends, shallow chipping and slight crinkling at top of rear panel]. (Romantic Lives) Series (20 mounted plates in color and B&W) One of this publisher's "Romantic Lives" series, five volumes of popular biography about "beautiful and famous women and chivalrous men" (although apparently Bonnie Prince Charlie was the only one of the latter to make the cut; the others included in the series were Nell Gwyn, Mary Queen of Scots, and Lady Hamilton). This one is a particular delight to flip through, as it's entirely illustrated by small mounted portrait plates of Marie, twenty in all, reproduced from various engravings, paintings, etc. This particular copy was once owned by silent-movie actress Jane Novak, as evidenced by her bookplate on the front pastedown and her ownership signature on the half-title page. (Also, and rather oddly, the dust jacket is printed on the verso of the dust jacket for an entirely different book: "Hunting Songs, with Other Poems & Verses" by George J. Whyte-Melville. The British Library Catalogue records no such exact title, although the same publisher had issued Whyte-Melville's "Hunting Poems" in 1911; might this "recycling" be an attempt to salvage some use from a mis-printed jacket for that book? Or perhaps the book was re-titled after the jacket had been printed, thus rendering it unsuitable. Where's the Dust Jacket Detective Squad when you need them?)
