[ex-rental library book, marked as such only by "withdrawal" stamp on the ffep, moderately worn but still a serviceable copy; the jacket, however, is securely glued down at the flaps and heavily worn all around]. "The most famous tennis player in the world writes a tennis romance with all the speed and thrill of his smashing cannon ball serve," which also incorporates (it sez here) "an enthralling exposé of the amateur-professional situation in American tennis, so daring as to be almost unbelievable -- yet absolutely authentic in every detail." Well, maybe not every detail: I doubt if the deeply-closeted Tilden managed to work in any reference to his homosexuality, for instance, which landed him in a good deal of trouble in later years. (He was arrested a couple of times in the 1940s, and did some jail time, related to his sexual activity with teenage boys.)
