(no dust jacket; in slipcase, as issued) [book is in brand-new, flawless condition; blue cloth slipcase shows the faintest bit of surface wear, just from normal handling, but still presents as like new]. (B&W and color photographs, artwork) Lavishly-illustrated history of MGM from its beginnings through 1959. This is the "boxed Collector's Edition," so stated on a special bookplate affixed to the ffep, bearing the printed signature of Ted Turner; adjacent to the bookplate is mounted a plastic sleeve, inside which is purported to be "an authentic strip of film taken from one of the studio's two greatest movies -- Gone with the Wind or The Wizard of Oz." (In this particular case it's the latter -- a 13-frame sequence of 35mm film showing the Scarecrow, still mounted on his post, pointing the way for Dorothy (11 frames), followed by a close-up of Judy Garland (2 frames). But I'm just gonna be a purist about this, OK? Although it's unquestionably a strip of film from Wizard, its "authenticity" is a bit ersatz, since it's printed on safety film stock, hence from a print struck at least eleven years, give or take, after the film's original 1939 release, a point further emphasized by the "SAFETY FILM" designation right on the strip itself. But a bigger sin is that it's from an Eastman Color (i.e. not Technicolor) print, and therefore already has a very pinkish cast to it. I'll let you suss out the irony of this on your own.) And now, in the Credit Where Credit's Due Dept., here are the additional contributing writers to this lovely book: Woolsey Ackerman, Robert S. Birchard, David Chierichetti, Hiro Clark, Vic Cox, Lee Davis, Daniel Eagan, John Fricke, Timothy Gray, Howard Mandelbaum, Richard P. May, Michele Rubin, Merrill Shindler, Linda Sunshine, Lena Tabori, and Marc Wanamaker. [PLEASE NOTE that the ISBN which I've associated with this book was taken from a printed label that was affixed to the exterior of the slipcase at the time I acquired the book, but has subsequently come detached, and has been placed inside the back cover of the book. I have NOT used the ISBN that appears on the book itself, because it's the same as that of the regular (dust-jacketed) trade edition. This seemed to me the best way to avoid confusion, and if you've read this far you'll have no doubt about which version of the book you'll be getting.]
