[spine very slightly turned, minor wear from a careful reading, minor surface abrasion on ffep from erasure of previous owner's name, NO remainder mark on book; jacket shows just light surface wear]. The author's well-received first (and, as it turned out, last) book, for which he drew from his experiences in the boxing world. Jacket blurbs by Joyce Carol Oates and James Ellroy, the latter calling it "the best boxing fiction since Leonard Gardner's 'Fat City'." The author, alas, died in 2002, and thus never saw the superb Oscar-winning Clint Eastwood film "Million Dollar Baby," adapted by screenwriter Paul Haggis from that story and one other. Un-remainder-marked copies are getting just a little harder to find all the time.
