(no dust jacket) [heavily worn, especially on bottom edge and along spine, with some deterioration of the binding along the bottom inch and a half of the front joint; the binding is solid, however, and the book is internally quite clean]. (B&W photographs) An examination of the Rudolph Valentino cult about a decade after his death, by an author who witnessed its growth first-hand, as custodian of the Cathedral Mausoleum at the Hollywood Memorial Park Cemetery (today known as "Hollywood Forever"), a position he assumed the year following Valentino's interment and held until 1940. "The germ of my desire to write this book," he explains in his Preface, "took life and grew from my amazement at the never ceasing parade of people seeking the Valentino crypt, when there are so few, comparatively, looking for the tombs of others who achieved greater and more sustained fame during their lives." He goes to some pains to explain that he was just a regular guy from Duluth, "too normal and healthy a person to be unduly influenced by the uncanny or the mystic," and a decade or so of dealing with the many thousands of devotees, seems to have turned him into a believer. The book includes all kinds of interesting stuff: excerpts from Valentino's diary; accounts of the author's own eerie experiences at the crypt; details of his interaction with the original Lady in Black; graphological and numerological analyses of Valentino's personality; examples of fan mail that Valentino continued to receive (c/o the cemetery!) long after his death; etc. The book was reprinted in 2007, but the original edition is quite scarce in any condition; bargain-priced here due to its less-than-stellar condition.
