(price-clipped) [minor wear to spine ends; jacket moderately edgeworn, internally repaired/reinforced with brown paper tape along top edge, a bit of shallow chipping along top edge of front panel, with some paper loss at top of spine]. The first of this Virginia-born author's several novels, "the story of a wild gypsy boy of the 18th Century in Spain who swallows life in great gulps during his youth, enters the Church (much to his own surprise) and later becomes the warm-blooded, ruddy-faced, much beloved Bishop of Havana" -- although his youthful indiscretions eventually catch up with him. A laudatory note from the publisher, Ives Washburn, describing his great pleasure at discovering this manuscript, fills the entire rear jacket panel. Fairly scarce, it would seem.
