[nice tight clean book, a little shelfwear to bottom edge and top of spine but apparently unread; jacket is clean and flawless except for a small and almost-invisible closed tear at the top of the rear panel]. A journalistic examination of "The Real World of the Private Detective," who sees his main job as being "to ease his clients through a system that's so extraordinarily indifferent, so corrupt, and characterized by such sloppy paperwork that even the bank robbers, Mafia bosses, crooked congressmen, porno queens, and cops-on-the-take that he has occasionally represented can learn new tricks from him." This was the first book by the eventual author of "Wiseguy" and "Casino," which were adapted as the Martin Scorsese films (also co-written by Pileggi) GOODFELLAS and CASINO.
