Trade PB A collection of critical essays and other pieces on the work of German-born director Max Ophuls (1902-1957), whose career encompassed distinctive work in Germany, France and Hollywood. Issued to accompany a retrospective of Ophuls's films presented at the National Film Theatre in London, the small book (87 pages) includes a 1957 interview with Ophuls (conducted by Francois Truffaut and Jacques Rivette), and two pieces by the director himself: a short essay, "The Pleasure of Seeing" (1954) and "Thoughts on Film" (1956). The latter, described as "an improvisation," is the script for a radio play with Ophuls himself as its primary character. In addition to the editor, Paul Willemen, other contributors are Frieda Grafe, Masao Yamaguchi, and Stephen Heath. Includes a combined chronology/filmography.
