[good solid book, minor wear to extremities, mild bumping to bottom corners, small indentation in fore-edge; jacket chipped at base of spine, extending into bottom of rear panel (no loss of text), dampstained along front hinge and on spine, minor paper loss at a couple of corners]. Novel about a young girl who is tricked into a so-called "white marriage" with a diplomat and man of fashion, all for the convenience of her scheming mother (who is the guy's lover). Complications ensue, portrayed by the Prix Goncourt-winning author (back in 1905) "with an eye to color and fine psychology." Published in France the previous year, as "La marche funèbre." The original Politzer dust jacket is quite uncommon.
