[nice clean copy, slight fraying and tiny exposure of cloth at top front corner but no other significant wear, "OFFICE FILE COPY" stamped on top of text block, with some related pencil annotation on the ffep; jacket is lightly soiled and moderately edgeworn, with a few tiny nicks and tears]. The second Charlie Chan adventure. In this one, he travels from Honolulu to a California ranch to investigate the murder of a Chinese ranch cook. This was the first of the Chan novels to be filmed -- twice, in fact: by Universal in 1927, with the Chan character (played by Sojin, the first in a long line of non-Chinese actors to essay the role) relegated to supporting status; and again by Fox in 1934, in the Warner Oland series. The novel also has a "Hollywood fiction" element, as at one point in the narrative a film crew shows up for a location shoot. This is the "Madison Square Books" edition, circa late 1930s, with the rear jacket panel bearing a list of 24 other books in the series.
