[nice tight clean copy, just a touch of wear along top edge of rear cover, appears unread; jacket similarly nice, bright and colorful with just a tiny black vertical line at the left edge of the front panel, and a long vertical crease in the rear flap]. "The first book to collect the best of [Cain's] shorter work -- selected short stories and sketches together with one of his finest serials, the novella published as different times under the titles 'Money and the Woman' and 'The Embezzler.'" The ten "entertaining sketches and dialogues," written for such journalistic outlets as the New York World and The American Mercury, are "beautiful models of efficiency and concision stamped with Cain's characteristic irony." The nine short stories are: "Pastorale"; "The Taking of Montfaucon"; "The Baby in the Icebox" (the basis for the 1934 film SHE MADE HER BED, Cain's first movie credit); "The Birthday Party"; "Dead Man"; "Brush Fire"; "Coal Black"; "The Girl in the Storm"; and "Joy Ride to Glory." (Parenthetically, I wonder if anybody else has ever noticed that the front-jacket illustration of the tough-looking mug in a felt cap is a straight rip-off of a common portrait photo of silent film star Lon Chaney?)
