(no dust jacket) [faint spotting on front cover, age-toning to edges of text block, one-time owner's pencilled name on ffep]. Uncommon mystery novel by a largely unknown author. Per Hubin, this was the fourth of five mysteries Ms. Perdue turned out between 1941 and 1944, before falling down dead herself -- "found dead of natural causes in her bed yesterday by her mother in their home" in Los Angeles, per the L.A. Times of February 24, 1945, which also stated that she had moved to L.A. "for her health when she first became ill." (The same brief notice also reported, incorrectly, that she had sold the film rights to her last novel six months before; that, however, would have been "Alarum and Excursion," published in 1944. In fact, it's probable that the novel she sold the rights to was *this* one, which in fact was the basis for a 1946 Warner Bros. B-picture called SHADOW OF A WOMAN.)
