[slight fading to cloth along top and bottom edges of covers, minor bump to top front corner; jacket shows just a touch of wear at the extremities]. Novel about "a young Negro boy who lives in Harlem with his mother, her 'husbands' who come and go, and his grandmother, who has the Word. He is a War Lord in his gang, the Royal Crocodiles." Probably the best-known book of this writer, who died at 44 in 1966, it was adapted into a play which ran for exactly two, count 'em, two performances at New York's Eugene O'Neill Theatre in February 1960, and subsequently as a film, directed by Shirley Clarke in 1963. The latter, notable for its semi-documentary style and location shooting, was selected for the National Film Registry in 1994.
