[front hinge starting to give just a bit at the lower end but otherwise a good sound copy, possible ex-library of some sort (with minimal traces, however), moderate wear to extremities, tiny spot on front cover, small bookseller's rubber-stamped name on front pastedown (Bertrand Smith "Acres of Books," Long Beach, California); the jacket, unfortunately, has a large piece torn away from the bottom left area of the front panel (see image), along with sundry other small chips, tears and general wear]. "Sarah was the daughter of Jezebel, Cornelia Curtois, the sculptress who careened across the world with a flaming intellect, vivid ideas, and a constant emotional need of lovers. It was in South America that Richard Lowth came across Cornelia adn when she was killed while his obsession with her was at its height, he transferred his love and ihs ideal of her to Sarah. This is the story of their marriage, of their attempt to make peace with each other and with love in Ecuador, England, and finally in Russia, where Richard worked feverishly and grew haggard for the Soviet concept of a new social order." Though the jacket blurb futher declares it "a big novel of brain and muscle and beauty," the New York Times critic was underwhelmed, finding it "a curious blend of romance and problem novel, brightly up to date in many respects but in others old-fashioned and almost naive." The British edition is quite scarce; this, the American edition, even a bit more so, with copies residing in just seven libraries per OCLC. Although the jacket is badly damaged at the front, the presence of a similar scene on the front cover of the book itself somewhat mitigates its ill effect.
