[good solid book, minor wear to extremities, original (1927) owner's name and adress in ink on front pastedown, along with an admonition that "if borrowed, please return"; jacket is worn, with a bit of paper loss at base of spine and several cornes, various small nicks and tears, etc.; SEE NOTES for speculation about provenance of the jacket]. (16 blue-toned film stills) The "Norma Talmadge Edition De Luxe" photoplay edition, a tie-in with the 1927 First National silent film of the classic story of a tragically doomed (cough, cough) love. The most famous Dame aux Camélias, of course, was Greta Garbo in the luscious George Cukor-directed 1936 version, but as the anonymous authors of the introduction to this edition will have you know, "of all the actresses who have ever played this part [a list that at that time included Sarah Bernhardt and Eleanora Duse on the stage and Theda Bara and Alla Nazimova on film], Miss Talmadge is probably the only one who almost exactly fits the description of the character on whom Dumas based his story." What makes this a "De Luxe" edition are several elements that go above and beyond the usual photoplay edition format: (1) 16 stills, at lesat twice the usual number employed by Grosset & Dunlap; (2) the fact that all the stills are tinted blue; and (3) the inclusion of another front jacket-panel, bound into the volume (with the frontispiece still on its verso). In addition, some previous owner of the book had trimmed out the text from the front flap and the real panel and glued them in at the front of the volume. (Which leads to the deduction that the fully-intact jacket on this book has been supplied from another copy.) Textually, this appears to be the standard English translation (if there can be said to be such a thing) of the original 1848 Dumas novel -- at least it's identical to the text one can find online, e.g. through Google Books -- as opposed to a novelization of the movie.
