(leather-bound; no dust jacket, as issued) [a bit of wear to spine extremities and corners of front cover, tiny scrape mark on front cover, faint staining near bottom of rear cover]. (B&W and color photographs) A hagiographic chronicle of the life and career of Paul "Bear" Bryant, the legendary coach who guided the University of Alabama football team for 25 years, garnering six national championships along the way. He retired at the end of the 1982 season and died four weeks later -- which screwed up the plans for this "Signature Edition" of the book, originally conceived as a limited/numbered edition, each copy to be personally signed by Bryant. As explained on the limitation page, "his sudden and unexpected death has now precluded a personal autograph," although the page still bears his "Authorized [but printed] Signature," attested to (with official seal) by a Notary Public (which if you think about it is pretty weird: what exactly is being "authorized" here?). Anyway, it's pretty much everything you'd want to know about Crimson Tide football from 1958 through 1982, and also about Bryant's earlier coaching gigs at Vanderbilt University, the University of Kentucky, and Texas A&M. And the book is "An Officially Licensed Product of the University of Alabama," so there. (This is copy no. 0037 of an unspecified number of copies.) And more: in a paper sleeve on the rear pastedown is a 45 rpm record containing a Bryant interview, some post-game commentary, and a statement of his "philosophy and creed."
