Mr. Skeffington

(price-clipped? see note) [nice-looking copy, the book itself bright and tight, showing no discernible wear; jacket lightly edgeworn and a little faded along the sine, with itsy-bitsy paper loss at bottom front corners, one short closed tear and associated diagonal crease at bottom of front panel, minor wrinkle at top of front panel]. Novel about a woman who "realized with a start one day that she was nearly fifty years old, and she was to learn more gradually and more cruelly that she was no longer the great beauty she once had been." Basis for the 1944 Warner Bros. movie starring (who else?) the great Bette Davis. Since the focus of both book and movie is quite clearly on the woman, why this hell isn't it titled "Mrs. Skeffington"? (You figure it out and let me know.) [NOTE: all four corners of the jacket flap are evenly but not extremely clipped, which makes me suspect that this is a book club edition, although there are no direct indicators of this.]
