The author, born into poverty in Brooklyn, New York, had a rough time as a young man -- he was a boxer for a time, joined the Marines (but was dishonorably discharged), and had frequent run-ins with the law -- but eventually turned lhis life around, went to Harvard Law School, and became a judge.
