[a little visible wear to book at both ends of spine, otherwise a nice clean copy; jacket is very nice, with a barely-noticeable one-inch crack along the upper front hinge, a touch of darkening to the spine and one tiny stain on the rear panel]. (B&W photo frontispiece) Williams's slightly longish one-act play (in four scenes) about an elderly widow who tries to bribe a doctor to perform a lobotomy on her troublesome niece, largely to prevent her from revealing the homosexuality of her dead son. Originally presented with another Williams one-act, "Something Unspoken," under the umbrella title "Garden District," the play was rather radically altered (the film industry's Production Code still being pretty squeamish about homosexuality at the time) for the 1959 film adaptation starring Katharine Hepburn, Montgomery Clift and Elizabeth Taylor, directed rather unsubtly by Joseph L. Mankiewicz from a screenplay by Gore Vidal. The original Broadway production starred Hortense Alden, Robert Lansing and Anne Meacham, all of whom are pictured in the book's photo frontispiece.
