[good solid book, top right corner of front cover just slightly bumped; jacket shows light surface wear, short diagonal wrinkle at top right corner of front panel]. (B&W photographs) Biography of the "mysterious and enigmatic" actress, who the jacket blurber thinks is "most immediately remembered" for her role as Ado Annie in the film version of OKLAHOMA! I would beg to differ; for me her most quintessential roles are those in which she was heartbreakingly vulnerable and ultimately damaged, such as THE BIG HEAT and IN A LONELY PLACE. At any rate, this book delves into her "strange private life -- including her controversial and shocking fourth marriage to her stepson." (That would be Anthony Ray, son of her second husband, director Nicholas Ray.) Her various travails included "a breakdown, battering husbands, disfiguring surgery, and a courageous eight-year battle with cancer." Her difficult final years were depicted in the 2017 movie FILM STARS DON'T DIE IN LIVERPOOL, based on the book of the same name, in which she was portrayed by a perfectly-cast Annette Bening.
