[beautiful copy, just a touch of shelfwear to book and jacket]. "The story of a girl whose fearlessness antagonizes the little village in Scotland which is her home, of her effect upon the three men who love her, and of how she perishes finally at the hands of her righteous townsfolk. It is the tale of a primitive Tess by an author who has never read Hardy, who uses words as though they had never been used before. The story moves swiftly from peak to peak -- murder, marriage, birth, death, until the ultimate heartbreaking climax." It also happens to have one of the most gorgeous dust-jacket designs of any book of this era, signed with a monogram (*see note below). Not by any means a rarity -- its sheer loveliness seems to have inspired a lot of people to preserve their copies -- but I doubt you'll find a jacket in nicer condition than this. [*NOTE: Heller and Chwast, in their book "Jackets Required; An Illustrated History of American Book Jacket Design, 1920-1950," state that the designer of this lovely jacket is unknown. However, I've observed this particular monogram -- an interlinked G, T and H -- on numerous other books, and believe it to be the signature of Georg T. Hartmann (1911-1989) -- even though, if that birthdate is accurate, would mean that he created it at the age of 19!]
