(price-clipped) [good solid book, minor shelfwear; jacket spine very faded, otherwise jacket is just modestly worn at extremities]. (B&W photographs, diagrams) A wonderful throwback to the analog era of filmmaking (you know, when film was still involved), this is a very hands-on guide to "the production of practically every special effect which it is possible for the amateur to produce. Although the range covered in this compendium is so, no part of it is beyond amateur resources. Many of the effects need no special equipment at all and much of the apparatus described and illustrated is easily made from odds and ends." (It's further noted that "almost all [of the book's 144 photographs] are frame enlargements from the author's own films.") A NOTE on the edition: there is a label on the copyright page that states the copyright date as 1960, and also says "First Published 1954"; underneath that label is simply printed "First Published 1954." There is nothing in the book itself that indicates it to be anything other than the book as it was published in 1954, i.e. I don't believe this to be a "later printing" or a "revised" edition, but rather that the publisher (for whatever reason, possibly for U.S. distribution?) felt compelled to make it seem more up-to-date by slapping on this additional label.
