(paper-covered boards; no dust jacket) [corners a little bumped and softened, light age-toning around edges of covers]. (B&W photographs, B&W and color graphics) The first issue of this somewhat pretentious hardcover publication, with an admitted bias towards the graphic arts. Included in this debut number: the first of a series of articles exploring the aesthetics of photography, by Helmut Gernsheim; an article (the first in English, it claims) about the illustrations of Jean Lurçat; an article, "The Typefoundry of Vincent Figgins, 1792-1836," by James Mosley; an article by Edward Ardizzone, "The Born Illustrator," with full-page examples by George Cruikshank and Gustave Dore; eight drawings of Brighton, "specially made by Lynton Lamb"; "Art & Indolence," a paper presented to the Double Crown Club by Richard Guyatt; an assessment of recent sculptures and drawings by Elisabeth Frink; an article showcasing items from the Gabrielle Enthoven Theatre Collection at the Victoria & Albert Museum; reviews of three new book typefaces; reviews of art exhibitions and books. "Motif" was published three times a year from its inception until 1962, then annually from 1963 through 1967. (This issue, at least, was originally issued with a clear acetate jacket, but the example that was on this copy when received was in such dreadful condition that we chose to discard it.) **** NOTE that additional shipping charges will be requested for international shipping of this slightly heaver than average item, or for Priority Mail service to U.S. destinations. If this concerns you, please contact us for a shipping quote before placing your order. ****
