[solid but shelfworn copy, with a touch of fraying to cloth at top of spine and bottom corners, tanning/spotting to edges of text block, one-time owner's small signature at top of ffep; jacket is age-toned and edgeworn, various small chips and tears along top edge, small tear and associated short creasing at bottom of front panel, about a 3-inch deep chip at base of spine]. The scarce first book by this highly-regarded Filipino poet (1914-1997), a collection of short stories set primarily in his native Philippines -- where his work was very influential even though he had by then settled in the United States, where he spent most of his life. Although successful in the U.S. and admired by many other poets, Villa's work never really made it into the mainstream of American literature, although there was a centennial celebration of his work held in New York in 2008, in conjunction with a reissued volume of his collected poems.
